3rd Albatross International Junior Golf Championship India

Hosts India and Thailand shared three titles in the 3rd Albatross International Junior Golf Championship India, held at the ITC Classic Golf Resort in Gurgaon, India.

One of the titles went to Moyu Sasaki of Japan, who shot 77, 75 and a closing one-under 71 to beat Thailand's Nattapun Siritrai by two shots. Sasaki, a stroke ahead after the second round, put in a wonderful display on the back nine (four-under), as she completed a fine victory in the top category.

Sasaki was one of two Japanese girls to tee it up at the ITC Classic, a Jack Nicklaus Signature course. The other was Ayaka Nakayama, who finished fifth in category 'A'. Sasaki and Nakayama are both students of the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy in South Carolina, USA, and both play the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Tour in the US. While Sasaki is in her first year, Nakayama is in her second.

Not surprisingly, the young ladies miss home comforts (among them Japanese food) but the sacrifice has clearly been worthwhile, for Sasaki and Nakayama have become better golfers since enrolling at the Hank Haney IJGA. Their dreams of playing the US LPGA Tour - the pinnacle in the women's game - may well become reality if present progress is any indicator.

Sasaki was averaging in the high 70's when she came to Florida during the spring of this year. She's already brought that down to 74, a reflection of her focus, and her quiet desire for improvement. "The best thing is that my play is getting a lot better," Sasaki admits.

Her driving stats have improved, and so have Nakayama's. It was the long game that both struggled with when they were acclimatizing to golf conditions in the US. "Everyone was hitting it so far!" Nakayama recalls. "And there are more good players in the US than there are in Japan." Course management, added Nakayama, was "pretty difficult".

Work on her fitness helped Nakayama put punch into her long game. She's also a more consistent golfer now. Earlier, Nakayama might follow an 80 one day with a 71 the next. Such form appears to be a thing of the past. In golf, numbers rarely lie: where last year Nakayama found the 80s more often, this year she's averaging 72. "I've improved so much," she says with pride.

All the hours put in - on the range, at the short game practice area, and in competition - has allowed these talented and enthusiastic 17-year-olds to mature into confident golfers. "A lot of time is spent on practice and play, every day" reveals Sasaki. That's something neither can do back home - golf in Japan is expensive, and space is often at a premium. "We can't play and practice as much when we're home," rues Sasaki.

Like it does many, India has beguiled Sasaki and Nakayama. "I have never seen so many people!" exclaimed Sasaki. Nakayama was all praise for the Albatross International Junior tournament. "The organizers have worked so hard, and have been so nice to us." On the golf course and away from it, they've enjoyed their maiden visit to the country. And with a win in the bag, Sasaki will certainly take back happy memories.

Both Sasaki and Nakayama feel the coolest thing about being at the Hank Haney IJGA is that they get to meet people from around the world, and make friends from different cultures. It may seem like golf 24-7, but it's more about growing up with the game. Moyu Sasaki and Ayaka Nakayama are learning assiduously, and learning well. Remember the names - you might come across them a few years from now.

第3回アルバトロス・インターナショナル・ジュニアゴルフ・チャンピオンシップ in インド

主催国であるインドとタイは、インドにあるITCクラシックゴルフリゾートで第3回アルバトロス・インターナショナル・ジュニアゴルフ・チャンピオンシップを開催しました。この大会では、全部で3選手権が行われました。

そのうちの一つの選手権で日本人の佐々木もゆが優勝を飾りました。佐々木のスコアは77、75、71。2位のタイ出身のナップタン・シリトライを2打差で振り切り、勝利を勝ち取りました。佐々木はセカンドラウンド後、1打差という僅差の試合を、インコースで4アンダーを叩き出し、その差を広げて優勝を確実なものにしました。

ジャック・ニクラウスデザインのコースで知られる、ITCクラシックでプレーする日本人は佐々木だけではありません。もう一人は中山綾香。2人共、アメリカ・サウスカロライナ州にあるHank Haney IJGAの学生で、アメリカのIJGTツアーでプレーしています。今年は佐々木が1年目、中山が2年目となります。

もちろん2人は母国の食事などが恋しくなっているはず。しかしそれを犠牲にして頑張っている価値は確実にでてきています。この2人はIJGA入学当時に比べて、ゴルフが著しく上達しています。今の上達が続けば、2人の夢であるUSLPGAツアーでプレーすることは現実になるでしょう。

今年の春、フロリダに来た時には佐々木のアベレージは70台後半でしたが、集中力と上達への熱意によって、今すでに74までアベレージを上げてきています。佐々木自身も「プレーが良くなってきたことが最高に嬉しい」と話しています。

佐々木のドライビングが上達してきたように、中山も上達しています。アメリカのゴルフ環境に慣れるのに少し時間がかかりました。中山は「みんなすごく飛ばしていた」と振り返ります。そして、「日本よりアメリカのほうが素晴らしいプレーヤーがたくさんいる」と語っています。また、「コースマネージメントは結構難しい」とも。

中山はフィットネストレーニングをすることによって、長い試合に耐えられるようになったと言います。今、中山は集中力が続くゴルファーに成長しました。以前、中山は1日目に80、2日目に71というスコアをだしたことがありました。しかしこれは過去の話。ゴルフにおいてスコア（数字）は嘘をつきません。昨年、しばしば80台をだしていた中山でしたが、今年はアベレージが72。自信をもって「すごく上達したと思う」と話してます。

ドライビングレンジで、ショートゲーム練習エリアで、競技で...、ゴルフに費やした全ての時間は強いゴルファーになるためのもの。佐々木は「毎日たくさん練習してプレーしています」と明かします。それは日本でできないこと。日本ではゴルフをするのに高い費用がかかるし、スペースも高級。「日本ではこんなにたくさん練習できない」と悲嘆しています。

佐々木と中山はインドに来て、「こんなにたくさんの人を見た事がない！」とびっくりしていた様子。中山は「主催者は私たちにすごくよくしてくれた」とアルバトロスインターナショナルジュニアトーナメントを絶賛していました。2人共、ゴルフコース内でも外でも、初めてのインドを楽しんでいました。佐々木には優勝というおみやげも含めて、楽しい思い出となったことでしょう。

佐々木と中山はIJGAの一番良いところに「世界中の留学生に会えること、違う文化の友達ができること」を挙げています。年中、ゴルフ三昧であるように見えますが、ゲームで成長することのほうが多い。佐々木、中山は勤勉に一生懸命学んでいます。是非この2人の名前を覚えておいてください。数年後この2人の名前に出会うことになるでしょう。
